What is Palliative Medicine?

Palliative medicine helps patients and families living with cancer to live as fully and as actively as possible, by providing the highest standards of pain and symptom control, psychological and practical support.

Patients can benefit from palliative medicine at any time - from diagnosis, throughout treatment and afterwards.

How can we help you?

  • Provide relief from pain and other symptoms
  • Alleviate any side-effects of your treatment
  • Enhance the quality of life experienced by our patients and their families

Their expertise is available to you at any stage of your illness or treatment.

All of the consultants in palliative medicine are specialist physicians who treat pain and other difficult symptoms sometimes experienced by patients with cancer.

They can arrange for you to be seen at your convenience - either during your admission for treatment or as an outpatient. At all times, they will work alongside the consultant in charge of your care and also co-ordinate with your GP.

You will need to be referred to see them by the consultant in charge of your care.
